Civil Parish

Civil parishes were originally ecclesiastical divisions, but later evolved into the geographic units of local administration: most nineteenth-century or earlier records are based on them. They are no longer in administrative use.

Most Roman Catholic parishes cover parts of more than one civil parish. Most Church of Ireland parishes correspond to the civil parish. Our placenames section will allow you to identify which civil parish covers any particular area.
